Downtown Bicknell Sign

Good news!

The Area Planning Commission Tuesday evening December 20th approved the plans by Bicknell Merchants and other interested entities in downtown Bicknell for a sign urging traffic to the downtown area and for attention to parks in the downtown area.

The location will be on the vacant lot owned by Blain Lannon at 67 and Main. The sign should be erected in the near future.

Drucy (Stilwell) Spluga

Hello Bicknell :) I have lived in Florida for 25 years and have recently been able to connect with people from Vincennes that I have fond memories of through Facebook. I have been trying to locate Bill Flickinger who is the bro of Jon. I have tried to find a contact email for Jon and this is the closest I have come.

Hope all is well in Bicknell :)

Contra 11-11-11 and 'Knox County's got Talent' 11-12-11.

Hope you have it marked on your calendar Friday Nov 11 at 7 pm, OTP in Vincennes!

Also this caught my eye--- 'Knox County's Got Talent' contest right here in Bicknell at the big new French Club on Lawton Street close to downtown Bicknell.

It would be great fun to do a dance for them and maybe win a prize! It is Saturday November 12 with free supper for contestants who must be there by 5:30 pm and entry fee is $10.

Entry deadline is November 9. Let me know if you think this is a good idea and to be presentable we need a certain number of people. They don’t say what the prize is but it must be something big!

Power Plant Work Force

They tell me that 130 plus people was laid off at the power plant yesterday, Friday the 7th. New contractors should rehire most if not all of them in a couple of weeks; but it appears that the electricians will be laying off next week.

John R. Stanczak

For Sale

The Restraunt on 2nd and Main Street Bicknell is for sale at least this is what I was told. All that I can say that with 3,000 people working at the Edwardsport power plant it would have been a great help if the mayor and council members could have done anything and I mean anything to promote business for Bicknell outside of ticketing them of course. Bicknell is slowly dying while the mayor is out playing and the council is waiting for him to decide for them as to what is to be done; after all they believe that they work for him so when the boss is away the council will play.
I guess I could have written For Sale Bicknell but there are few customers for such an offer.

Power Plant Work Force

I have been told that the Edwardsport Power Plant will be laying off soon, around November, then will be starting new contractors who will be re-hiring many with jobs that will last around an additional 10 months.

Post office delivery

It seems that the new mail lady wants to change mail box locations and really does not want to deliver where she must turn around her cart.

I checked with the post master of the Vincennes Post Office and was assured that the mail lady does not have the authority to force the change of location of any mail boxes unless it is a hazard for her; also she is also starting to push the idea that she may not come down some dead end streets and the people will be required to go to the Bicknell Post Office to retrieve their mail; this is also not in her job description. The Vincennes Post Master told me that if the mail lady does not want to drive down a dead end street she can walk.

The post delivery is required and outside of danger to her she must deliver. The Vincennes Post Master told me that he will be calling the Bicknell Post Master to discuss the US mail requirements for delivery.

WTHI News "NO Funding For Bicknell"

Bicknell's plans put on hold

BICKNELL, IND. (WTHI)
- A southern Indiana town's push for a million dollar makeover for its downtown hits a funding problem.
A denied request for cash has the small town of Bicknell looking for new options.
Community leaders in Bicknell have some big plans to try and bring new life to the old downtown.
When they went to the Knox County Development Corporation looking for some funding the organization responded with "not now."
"There always seems to be a greater array of desirable and worthwhile projects than there are monies available to fund those projects," said Gary Gentry with the K.C.D.C.
K.C.D.C. officials say they feel that instead of taking on a new project they need to start re-trenching.
"Some felt the election results Tuesday were a call to fiscal responsibility," added Gentry.
While the K.C.D.C. is calling their action a delay on the request to help with the downtown project, Bicknell officials are calling it a surprising denial.
"I really thought we would get the money, but we didn't," said Bicknell Mayor Jon Flickinger.
The mood in Bicknell is very disappointed that the K.C.D.C. decided not to jump in and fund the project, but it doesn't mean the revitalization plans for downtown Bicknell are dead.
"We're going to move right ahead," said Flickinger. "We're going to look at other options to see what we can come up with. We're not going to give up just yet."
The community spent months working on the plan for the downtown project that will impact everything from street lights to sidewalks.
Now, they have to figure out a way to make a couple hundred thousand dollars appear to make the million dollar idea a reality.
The Development Corporation says it will not reconsider the Bicknell request until newly elected Knox County officials take office.

Schools

Once again it is rumored that they want to close one of the three elementary schools; they plan to move the jr high school out to the high school and close one school but for now they won't say which one.

So we have to guess which one:

Last time it was either West or Central and rebuild East.

What has changed?

In my opinion it will be the one built not the one standing. Edwardsport will require the most work as it needs to be replaced; so the most collections. The other two only need some repair and that doesn't create a new tax incentive does it. I guess I expect that the closing part is between Central and West. So West has the most room as Central is basicly closed in on all sides by either housing or streets, common sence would be to close Central but they are usually short on sence so I would say all things considered they will want to close West. If it is Central then the City of Bicknell and every citizen of Bicknell should take notice and action to remove any school board member who favors it.

Time will tell.

Condolences To A Councilman's Family and Friends

I read in the Bicknell paper that Councilman Carrie had passed away and was somewhat shocked even though I knew that he was fighting cancer. My family offers condolences to his family and friends for their loss.
