VINCENNES, Ind. - Following a 50 percent growth rate in the past 36 months, Vincennes University’s Distance Education program reached a milestone Thursday when enrollment reached 15,000 credit hours in a single semester.
“This success clearly indicates that VU is meeting a growing need for flexible delivery of higher education courses. Both complementing and extending VU’s longtime statewide mission, Distance Education is a great benefit for persons seeking to prepare for promising careers,” said VU President Dick Helton.
Offering almost 400 online course sections each semester, VU’s Distance Education courses have proven popular with a growing number of students worldwide, according to Don Kaufman, dean of Extended Studies. They are also among the lowest cost courses offered in the state.
“VU offers quality, highly transferable courses to students when they want it, where they want it, and at a price they can afford. Students enjoy the convenience of accessing their courses any time they have an internet connection,” Kaufman said.
Shanni Simmons, director of VU Distance Education, said that enrollment has grown 50 percent in the past 36 months. “This growth is due to the hard work of the Extended Studies team and VU supporting offices. We are honored to assist students with receiving a quality education. Distance Education enables VU to reach students around the world and work with students who are unable to follow a traditional semester schedule,” Simmons said.
Through VU’s Distance Education program, students may complete one bachelor’s degree, 27 associate degrees, and 7 degree completion or certificate programs.
Courses are available to students over the Internet, by traditional
paper-based correspondence, and in some cases, on CD. Within the state of Indiana, television and two-way video courses are offered on a case-specific basis. Courses are scheduled year-round and offered in different term options to accommodate a variety of student needs: regular semester-based courses, eight-week courses, and six-month courses. A schedule of courses can be found at www.vinu.edu/distance or by contacting the Distance Education office at 1-800-880-7961.
