Reps. Dermody, Eberhart Announce Tough Immigration Legislation

(STATEHOUSE) Jan. 23. 2009 – State Reps. Tom Dermody (R-LaPorte) and Sean Eberhart (R-Shelbyville) have announced the filing of House Bill 1488, a bill that requires state agencies to verify the lawful presence in the United States of certain individuals who apply for public benefits. In addition, employers would be required to use the E-Verify system to confirm the legal status of its employees.

Under the bill, unauthorized residents who attempt to apply for public benefits would be charged with a Class D felony. Additionally, the bill broadens the authority of law enforcement officials when dealing with employers of unauthorized residents.

“I believe, given these especially though times, that public benefits must only be given to Hoosiers,” said. Rep. Dermody. “We simply cannot afford to be freely giving taxpayer benefits away to people who are not legal residents of this country. This legislation would go a long way in guaranteeing that.”

“This is still a big problem,” said Rep. Eberhart. “We haven’t heard enough about it this session. This is still a major issue, and Hoosiers are calling for action. People want to know what is being done about it, and it needs to be addressed.”

HURRAY FOR INDIANA!

I hope this bill will pass. I have no doubt your governor will sign it.

Speaking of the Indiana governor, is it possible to work out a deal where California and Indiana could trade? Our governor lifts weights and knows lots of English words!

A trade is possible

Most democrats would be willing to make the change but our governor may object because of the problems created by your legislators.

Spend your state tax refund "IOU" wisely.

I wonder if your governor and congress are being paid with IOU's?

A Trade

Well, I was thinking of a package deal. Actually, all kidding aside, we could do much worse than Arnold. The governor of Illinois comes to mind. Our California Attorney General, Jerry Brown was arguably one of the worst governors the state has ever had. He even made a run for President. Now, that's scary!

Speaking of scary, I used to think the most frightening thing was knowing that most of Jerry Springer's guests have driver’s licenses, and many of them are registered voters!

I really have no opinion at this time as to how Jerry Brown is performing in his present position. Having said that, I believe Brown was one of the best mayors the city of Oakland, California has ever seen. No one was more surprised than me at his performance as mayor. In my more than thirty years in the Bay Area I never lived in Oakland, but had I lived there I certainly would not have voted for him for his first term. For his second term he would have gotten my vote.

As for IOU’s, I have no tax refund coming. In fact, I owe the state. When I make that payment California’s woes should be a thing of the past.
